fright night

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

i kinda love dress up parties. becoming someone else, or at least the idea of someone else, long enough to see the world through another’s eyes. i entered a moulin-rouge-esque world on saturday night with attire way too fussy for real life. but for those few hours, the fantasy was a bona fide reality.

above photos are a sneak peek at the two dollar stallions on stage and in action.

i can honestly say that a few hours of dance leaves me feeling more liberated and strong and peaceful than anything else on earth. to move with abandon, to release all fears and judgements and inhibitions, brings me into a state of utter presence. there is nothing else like it.

i finally watched so you think you can dance two weeks ago while in texas.

what. a. treat.

one of the contestants performed a highly emotional piece to total eclipse of the heart that moved me to tears. her grace, her strength, her willingness to let go and fall into the moment was stunning and absolutely inspiring. take a look below.

breathtaking.

i can still remember the first time i saw dirty dancing. a sense of guilt rolled over me like a big, black cloud while i willingly watched all that raunchy transgression. but i loved every minute of it, from patrick swayze’s pelvic rolls to cynthia rhodes’ long legs underneath those sexy dresses i dreamed of one day wearing. from that moment on, i wanted to grow up and be a dancer of some sort, as long as it involved me freely moving my body the way patrick and cynthia so effortlessly moved theirs.

then i saw kevin bacon in footloose. a rebellious, good guy who could dance. every girl’s dream (or maybe just mine).

i see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what is too deep to find for words.

have you ever caught yourself watching someone dance? listening to their body. reading their face. hearing the words they have not yet spoken aloud. the dancer moves through the space with such passion, telling her story through movement, freeing herself of any chains holding her down, as if saying “i am unapologetically me in this moment. i have nothing to hide, nothing to prove to anyone. i will do as i please.”

there is freedom in truth. the body does not lie.
